CHÂTEAU-MUSÉE DE NOIRMOUTIER

About us

  • Musée de France
Built at the end of the 12th century by the lords of La Garnache, Noirmoutier castle is one of the best preserved in the Grand Ouest region.
Listed as a historic monument, the keep of the château houses a museum dedicated to the history of the island. A permanent exhibition traces the building’s history right up to the 19th century. Because of its strategic position, the island of Noirmoutier has seen several invasions over the centuries and was one of the theatres of the troubled period of the Vendée Wars, as evidenced by the painting “The Death of General d’Elbée”, by Julien Le Blant, which can be seen on site.
The museum also features a temporary exhibition devoted to a little-known facet of the history of the island of Noirmoutier.
The visit concludes at the top of the keep with a unique view of the island of Noirmoutier.

The castle-museum is open to visitors throughout the restoration work on the ramparts.
New for 2024: Exhibition on the women of Noirmoutier.

Workshops for children (aged 6 to 15) are available at €7 during the short school holidays (the presence of an accompanying adult is compulsory – free for the accompanying adult).
