Description

The reed path is at its best in spring and autumn (it is more difficult to use in winter).

The blue of the ocean may not be far away, just a few kilometres from here, but it’s with its shades of green that the small village of Le Perrier shines. A ‘Station Verte’ (Green Resort) nestling in the heart of the Marais Breton Vendéen, it promises a natural and authentic immersion. Come and discover it up close, during a gentle stroll along the reed path.

This walk is a real treat for nature lovers. Taking in small market-garden roads, criss-crossing fields and localities, it takes you on a journey of discovery of typical biodiversity.

In short, the Reed Trail offers a breath of fresh air in a peaceful setting.

Step 1: L'eglise et ses vitraux

Saint-Sauveur church, whose foundations date back to the 12th century, was partially rebuilt between 1906 and 1912 in a neo-Romanesque style. The spire of the bell tower rises to a height of 32 m. Inside, the main stained-glass windows, created in 1940, are the last work of the Vendée master glassworker Louis Mazetier. Between 1930 and 1950, he was one of the most inventive creators of French sacred art.

Step 2: Le marais doux

The landscape of Le Perrier is as surprising as it is exotic, criss-crossed by water and fields. The marsh changes with the seasons, offering a veritable palette of colours: white in winter, silvery and cottony in autumn, green and flowery in spring and honey in summer.

This marsh, with its fresh waters coming from the bocage, is an ideal site for many animal species, including eels, green frogs, ducks, reed burbards and snipe.

The presence of freshwater is reflected in the greater number of trees than in the north of the marsh (where the water is salty), the reeds along the banks and the duckweeds that crowd the surface.

Step 3: Le roseau, roi des berges

This walk is so named because the reed is undeniably the plant that gives the marsh its identity. There are several varieties, including the common reed, which is the most widespread. It can be recognised by its feather-like inflorescence. This reed was used to make the roofs of the bourrines, the traditional dwellings of the marshes.
