Your itinerary
Step 1: Le puits des Rochelles
There are few wells in the marsh, as the water is brackish and cloudy even at shallow depths. However, the Rochelles well is unique in that it is located in a limestone outcrop, in one of the few raised areas of the marsh. As a result, the water is of excellent quality. Until the 1970s, people came from far and wide to get their water, until drinking water was supplied.
Step 2: Le monument de la Rochejaquelein
Take a slight detour along the path (from the chemin de la Grenouillère, turn right onto the chemin de la Tisonnière) to discover the Rochejaquelein monument. This is the site of the Battle of Ile de Rié (1622) and the uprising at Les Mathes in 1815. The latter led to the death of Louis de la Rochejaquelein. Although the site has now been restored to its former glory, it remains a witness to history.
