NOTRE-DAME-DE-MONTS

Description

Why not take a dip in the forest? That's the promise of the Pays de Monts forest. Between pines, holm oaks and cypresses, nature surrounds you! But are you aware of all the different plant species?

This forest, planted entirely by man from the 1850s onwards, was created as part of an afforestation policy following a Napoleonic decree. Fixing the dunes had become a major issue for the populations of the coastal communities. The first pine seedlings were planted. Since then, the pines have welcomed many neighbours under the canopy. There are now more than fifty trees and shrubs for you to discover as you stroll through the arboretum. Thanks to special signage, you can find the name of each plant listed (written in relief) as well as a drawing of it, to help you recognise it among its neighbours.

You can follow this 600-metre trail at your own pace, keeping all your senses alert. It is perfectly safe, enclosed by a barrier. The wide, flat course is suitable for toddlers and pushchairs, as well as for people with reduced mobility or visual impairments. The path is bordered by a wheel-chasing strip, with benches at regular intervals.

Don’t be surprised if you hear a few croaks during your walk. Ponds have been created along the route. These wetlands are real ecological hotspots, and are home to a large number of amphibians (in other words, the whole family of frogs and toads) that are a joy to observe!

The arboretum is open to the public, so you’re free to enjoy a moment of discovery and relaxation.
