Conférence – Le Raz de Marée de 1924
The Saturday 28 September at 15 a.m00
Ferme du Vasais Rue du Vasais 85160 SAINT-JEAN-DE-MONTS
Event description
On the night of 8 to 9 January 1924, an exceptional storm hit and shook the Atlantic coast, causing 39 deaths, including 6 in the Vendée, and one shipwreck. The violence of this tidal wave, which caused considerable devastation, was considered unprecedented at the time. When the sea receded, after rising five metres, wrecks of all kinds littered the beaches, quays and surrounding roads: Granite blocks had been ripped from houses, boats had sunk or run aground. It is this Dantean night and this tragedy of the sea that Mr Roland Mornet, a ship's captain and maritime history enthusiast, will be talking about on 28 September in a conference-debate that he will be presenting in the Salle Martel, at the Ferme du Vasais. Organised by Histoire-Arexcpo.
