For this session, the Silk Road in the footsteps of Marco Polo

Who hasn’t dreamt of travelling the Silk Road in the footsteps of Marco Polo? For more than 2,000 years, people from all walks of life travelled the caravan routes from the imperial city of Xi’an to China, crossing the hostile deserts of the Gobi and Taklamakan, as well as the fearsome Pamir plateau, often referred to as the “Roof of the World”. Caravanserais, dead cities and gigantic Buddhist sanctuaries bear witness to the richness of this prodigious history. Today, in landscapes of rare beauty, daily life continues in Central Asia.
