Castle-Museum of Noirmoutier

Built at the end of the XIIth century by the La Garnache lords, the Noirmoutier castle is one of the best preserved in the West of France.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the island’s history. A permanent exhibition redraws its history until the XIXth century.
Noirmoutier, by its strategic position, known many invasions through the decades, and was one of the best theatres of the Vendée war, as the table “La Mort du Général d’Elbée” of Julien Le Blant shows it on site.
The museum also proposes a temporary exhibition dedicated to an unknown face of the Island.
The visit ends up at the top of the donjon with a unique view on Noirmoutier.

The castle and museum is open during work and restoration of ramparts.

Workshops for kids (from 6 to 15) are proposed at 7€ during school holidays (the presence of an adult is required - free for them).
