JOURNÉES EUROPÉENNES DES MÉTIERS D'ART – LE COMPTOIR DU TAPISSIER
105 rue des Loges 85200 FONTENAY-LE-COMTE
Event description
Le Comptoir du Tapissier opens its doors to you and invites you to come and discover the atmosphere of the workshop, the different materials used for the traditional reupholstering of armchairs and the making of curtains and home textiles.
You will also discover the tools used in our work. Virtually identical to those used by our predecessors since the 18th century, they enable us to perpetuate the upholsterer’s craft and perpetuate the know-how handed down by our elders.
The know-how required to practise our trade-passion requires a long apprenticeship.
Repeating the same gestures over and over again allows us to acquire the necessary knowledge and mastery “at the tip of our fingers”. The constant search for improvements, even new techniques, and the quest for perfection are essential elements that create a constantly renewed interest.
Our customers often tell us that we are artists. We like to tell them that we are simply craftsmen who try to practise our trade with art, who try to master the necessary know-how “to the tip of our fingers”.
We’ve also opened our doors to the public with an exhibition of old photos of the Rue des Loges, craftsmen in Fontenay in bygone days, and old advertisements for upholsterers.
To coincide with JEMA 2024, and in keeping with the theme, the heritage department of the town of Fontenay le Comte is organising 2 themed flash visits to the old faubourg des Loges (where we are located), where the place names remind visitors of the craftsmen’s activities of the past.
Free admission.
