Babette, a French refugee fleeing the Paris Commune, arrives in a small Protestant Danish village. Having worked as a cook in Paris, she is now hired as a servant by two elderly sisters who are pastors' daughters. With humility and patience, she spent years learning Danish and the local cuisine. Until one day, as fate would have it, Babette decides to thank the nuns for their welcome.
