About us
In Notre Dame de Monts, Kulmino adds relief to the meadows of the Marais Breton Vendéen. The structure with its evocative name dominates the Monts landscape like a local totem. It is often used as a landmark by walkers, cyclists, aviators and drivers in a marsh that stretches as far as the eye can see. You'll have no trouble getting to the foot of this water tower.
Still in operation, its 5,000 m3 tank supplies drinking water to the commune of Notre Dame de Monts, its neighbours La Barre de Monts and Saint Jean de Monts, as well as the islands of Yeu and Noirmoutier.
The building opens its doors to you and invites you to experience a spectacular escape 70 metres above the ground! From the top of the platform, reached by lift, you can enjoy a breathtaking view. If you don’t want your head in the clouds, you’d better choose a fine day with clear skies… The panorama extends 360° over the marsh, forest, dunes and islands. In a single glance, you can take in the immensity of these natural areas. Binoculars and orientation tables positioned at the four cardinal points help you to see more clearly.
Kulmino also houses two permanent exhibitions:
– Water, life and us”: what better place than a water tower to explain the cycle from source to tap in a simple and entertaining way?
– Landscapes and renewable energies”: an invitation to decipher the way in which man shapes the landscape and makes the most of its natural resources. As a bonus, a virtual reality headset lets you immerse yourself in an offshore wind farm.
During the school holidays, the experience is completed by :
– P’tits mômes” workshops for children (Tuesdays during the spring and autumn holidays);
– Landscape readings, given by an interpreter on afternoons in July and August;
– unusual evening events on Mondays in July and August, with the promise of spectacular sunsets.
Take advantage of your visit to take a break in the gentle marshland. In season, canoe trips depart from the foot of the water tower. Picnic tables are available for lunch and snacks. This site has been awarded the “Accueil Vélo” label, and cyclists will also appreciate the inflator station.
